Evansville Sewer Resources: Who Owns What & Who to Call

The short version of everything on this page: the main is the utility’s, the lateral is yours, and knowing that before a failure is worth real money.

The Ownership Rule

Evansville Water & Sewer Utility states it directly: the water and sewer service lines connecting your home to the utility’s mains are the homeowner’s responsibility — and repairs to them are covered by neither EWSU nor basic homeowners insurance. Problems in the public main are the utility’s side: report those to EWSU customer service at (812) 436-7846. Everything from the main connection to your house is a call to a licensed plumbing contractor.

The HomeServe Option, Honestly

EWSU partners with HomeServe to offer optional water and sewer line repair plans to its customers (with a share of plan revenue funding a local water-bill assistance program). If you carry one of these plans, it’s your first call for a covered line failure. If you don’t — like most homeowners — the pages on this site are your map: scope, options, trenchless or replacement, multiple written estimates.

Insurance Realities

Standard policies: the pipe itself is wear-and-tear, excluded; interior backup cleanup is often covered or coverable. Service-line endorsements from your own insurer are the third path worth a ten-minute call — before, not after.

The Two Questions That Matter

Do you know what your lateral is made of and what shape it’s in? If your home predates the mid-1970s and you don’t, a camera inspection answers it for a couple hundred dollars. Is the line failing? Then it’s footage, itemized estimates, and the repair-vs-replace decision — and we’ll connect you with licensed contractors for every step.

We’re a local referral service. Call or send the form and we’ll connect you with a licensed plumbing contractor serving the Evansville area — for a camera inspection, a repair quote, or a straight answer. No charge to you for the referral.
